Do you fly a drone? You may now be required to register it with the FAA.

December 30, 2015

According to the Federal Aviation Administration:

“Effective December 21, 2015, anyone who owns a small unmanned aircraft of a certain weight must register with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) registry before they fly outdoors. People who previously operated their UAS must register by February 19, 2016. People who do not register could face civil and criminal penalties.”

The cost to register is $5 but if you register in the first 30 days (no later than January 20th, 2016) your fee will be refunded. The certificate is good for 3 years. Your unique registration number must be affixed to any drone you fly that weighs more than 250 grams but less than 25 Kilograms. Drones above the 25 Kg weight limit cannot be registered on this platform and must use the Aircraft Registry process.

The registration number must be visible on the drone without the use of tools. It can be located in the battery compartment if that is easily accessible.

Fly safe and legal to avoid potential fines and penalties.
